Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has previewed his side’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has urged his team to harness the hurt from their first-leg loss to Porto in the Champions League last 16 to upset Newcastle United on Saturday night.
The Gunners succumbed to Portugese injury time on Wednesday, although Arteta’s team recovered to overcome Premier League title rivals Manchester City the previous time they lost in Europe.
And Arteta is looking for a similar response from Newcastle, whose 1-0 victory at St. James’ Park in November was marred by controversy. The decision to let Anthony Gordon’s winning goal stand was dubbed a “disgrace,” and both Bruno Guimaraes and Kai Havertz escaped red cards.
“That’s the response we require,” Arteta declared. “We want to set the mood in the stadium right away, so I’m asking everyone to show up tomorrow night with all of their might because the team will need it.”
“We are in a really good moment in the Premier League and we want to continue to be there and tomorrow’s game is vital to achieve that.” With five straight victories under their belt and 21 goals scored, including back-to-back triumphs against West Ham United 6-0 and Burnley 5-0, Arteta’s team is confident going into the match. Despite Newcastle’s four-game winning streak, they have allowed nine goals in those games, which is concerning considering Arsenal’s recent goal-scoring prowess.
Although there is an eighteen-point difference between the two teams in the first flight standings, Arteta expects a challenging game against a “really good team”.
“Normally they have a very different approach, especially when they are not in possession of the ball,” he stated. In contrast to Porto, there are so two radically distinct setups.
They are, in fact, a really strong team. They have excellent players and excellent coaching. They are tough to beat for both us and a plethora of opponents, and they have a terrific team spirit.
“There is always a history associated with each club. There’s always the history and the future to consider. We just concentrate on our tasks since we are aware of how important the game is.”
