Before a double header that pits two of the top four against
Philippe Clement and his hopes of retaining the top spot, Rangers play Hearts.
The manager of the Gers will put any thoughts about Kilmarnock on hold until this afternoon at Ibrox once the final whistle blows, given his team is without Todd Cantwell due to a hamstring injury.
Rangers will face Hearts, one of the best teams in Europe, this afternoon. Never mind Scotland; the manager has selected Hearts to win. The two league games played so far have been close contests.
Hearts vs. Rangers: Team news is confirmed
Rangers dominated possession and made 28 shots on goal compared to Hearts’ one in the thrilling 2-1 victory at home in October.
If ever there was a lesson in being clinical, this was it.
It also indicates that defense players Jack Butland and the others will have to be alert.
The only concern going into the game is Ridvan Yilmaz because of Lawrence Shankland’s goal at the back post in their previous meeting.
It’s not exactly a fair physical contest.
Thoughts haven’t really centred on defending, Rangers will need to improve farther up the field.
This week, Todd Cantwell won’t be there, but
Clement has two players he knows can contribute goals and inventiveness in Mohamed Diomande and Tom Lawrence.
Compared to the first few weeks of Clement’s employment, the depth is far improved.
The offensive line has fewer alternatives than the defense; in fact, the only decision that needs to be made is who gets the go-ahead during the attack.
On the wing, though, is a surprise.
Dujon Sterling can play practically anywhere, and as we saw against St Johnstone, his added physicality will be helpful during set-plays. He can also cause trouble with the ball.
Although only three points are important at this point in the season, taking a stand now that you are ahead by two would be significant.
Hopefully, for once, the strikers are equipped with their shooting boots.
