Barry Ferguson says ‘immense’ 24-year-old is so important for Rangers boss Philippe Clement.
Barry Ferguson believes Philippe Clement has a man in his Rangers squad who can cover for him anywhere on the pitch.
This season, Dujon Sterling has shown significant improvement under Clement despite a lack of opportunities under Michael Beale.
In the summer, the manager signed him on a free transfer from Chelsea, mostly to cover James Tavernier at right-back.
Sterling played only two of the first 14 Scottish Premiership games due to Tavernier’s captaincy and ability to avoid injury (Transfermarkt).
Clement saw Sterling’s adaptability as a valuable asset to his team and started using him in central midfield.
Rangers fans first observed this during their epic Europa League triumph over Real Betis in Seville, which advanced them to the final 16.
Sterling was very comfortable on the ball, covered a lot of ground, and demonstrated agility that few of his colleagues possessed.
Clement has a reliable player, as seen by his impressive performance in the Viaplay Cup final against Aberdeen. That’s why Sterling has been playing as a winger against specific opponents since then.
The 24-year-old’s strong form was disrupted by a two-match suspension following a dubious red card in Neil Warnock’s first game as Aberdeen manager.
Sterling returned to the squad and contributed to the recent victory over St Johnstone. He hopes to start against Hearts this afternoon, although Mohamed Diomande and John Lundstram provide competition in the middle of the pitch.
Barry Ferguson raves about Dujon Sterling.
During a debate on The Go Radio Football Show, Barry Ferguson expressed his admiration for Dujon Sterling.
The former Ibrox captain values Sterling’s adaptability and considers him one of Philippe Clement’s most essential players, despite not starting every game.
Ferguson said of Sterling: “Listen, the only positions he hasn’t played yet are up front or in goal; he can play wherever. He came in as a defender but played central midfield, and I felt he was fantastic in there.
“He’s played on the right and left sides, and you can see how having players like that in the squad makes a big impact.
“I enjoy seeing him. He’s also a good athlete who knows his way around the pitch. “He is an important player for the manager.”
