NESN’s Jack Edwards breaks silence over health concerns: ‘I don’t have dementia’ (report)
NESN’s Jack Edwards is a prominent voice in Boston sports. So when something changes in the way he speaks, admirers are quick to notice.
The play-by-play announcer on NESN’s Boston Bruins broadcasts has changed in recent years. He does not respond as quickly to phone calls. Instead, he pauses and slurs his words.
Fans on numerous sites have speculated that Edwards has had health issues. During a recent interview with Chad Finn of the Boston Globe, Edwards refuted this claim.
“I did not have some kind of accident,” he stated to the Globe. “I don’t have cancer. I do not have dementia. I have not had a stroke. All of this is corroborated by Mass. “General neurology.”
This is not the first time Edwards has denied reports regarding his health. In December, he confirmed on social media that he is healthy.
He was not unwell. He was only on vacation.
“Contrary to disinformation (imagine that!), I am fit and healthy… I’m looking forward to calling years of Bruins games. I am on a holiday week family vacation. Edwards wrote, “First time in 17 years.”
However, Edwards admitted to the Globe that his speech had slowed. However, the broadcaster claims that testing have not discovered a precise cause for the lag.
“It doesn’t fit in any slot,” he told The Globe. “There have been a few possibilities, but they haven’t reached a definitive diagnosis after working on me for a year and a half. As you may guess, having a slowing in my speech is really annoying for me.”
Edwards, 66, has been calling Bruins games on NESN since 2005. Edwards, an Illinois native and University of New Hampshire alumnus, previously worked as an ESPN “SportsCenter” anchor from 1991 to 2003.
