Mike Dodds has been named Sunderland’s interim boss for the second time this season

Although he noted that the timing would need to be ideal and that his entire attention is on the 13 games left in the current season, Mike Dodds stated he won’t rule himself out of consideration for the head coach position at Sunderland permanently.

This week, Dodds was named interim head coach for the second time in his career. He did well in his first stint in charge after Tony Mowbray left. He said his ideas haven’t really altered, but he was obviously open to the possibility of taking on the role should he impress over the upcoming weeks and months. Subsequently, he expressed that he still believed he needed to improve and that he was not in a hurry to go into the dugout permanently.

“I tried to answer it respectfully last time and where I’m at with it is, I’m really respectful of how big this football club is and that there will be hundreds of people who would love to be in this position,” Dodds replied.

Mike Dodds gives honest view on prospect of taking head coach role permanently

“I won’t state outright that I don’t want the position because I value Sunderland as a football team and its supporters above all else, but I also want to be a head coach someday, and I understand that this may be my one and only chance to do so. Therefore, in terms of my method and my goals, it must be appropriate for me.

Twelve weeks ago, I wasn’t throwing in the towel, and in my opinion, not much has changed since then. I enjoy working with the football club, so I’m pleased to lend a hand and continue working with the players. Regarding my timeline, however, not much has altered.”

On Saturday, Sunderland takes on Swansea City at the Stadium of Light, followed by a difficult stretch of games against Norwich City, Southampton, and Leicester City. The QPR visit then comes before the March international break.
