‘Class and quality’: Mike Dodds sends emotional message to Tony Mowbray

Tony Mowbray is taking time away from management to undergo medical treatment

After Tony Mowbray, the former Sunderland manager, left the Birmingham City dugout to receive medical attention, Mike Dodds wished him well.

It is anticipated that Mowbray will be gone for six to eight weeks, during which time his close friend and longtime helper Mark Venus will take over. Venus is still receiving guidance and assistance from Mowbray, and Dodds disclosed that he even took the time to wish Dodds well on his upcoming second temporary tenure this week.

Dodds claimed the news made him consider the extent of Mowbray’s influence on him during their time together on the team, adding that the Sunderland players were upset about it. He remarked that everyone at the club was excited to see Mowbray in the dugout shortly and was supporting for him and his family.

“Tony spoke to me after the game on Saturday so I was aware of the situation before it came out on Monday,” Dodds stated.

“I talked to the players on Monday about it because I thought it was crucial that they hear it from me before it went viral on social media.

“It’s remarkable how you don’t appreciate the impact a decent man has on you when something like this occurs to them. I had a very trying day on Sunday, and Michael Proctor and Alessandro [Barcherini], the other staff members, and I am very sad for Tony. I am aware that Monday’s dressing room was tense.

“Everyone associated with the football club we wish him all the best, I have spoken to him.

“Even though he has his own personal issues, it’s evident that he is going through what he is going through because the same week he takes the class, he calls me and wishes me well, saying some really beautiful things about me. It is our desire that he returns to the dugout as soon as possible.
