Rangers are close to reaching an agreement with John Lundstram to extend his contract at Ibrox beyond this season, according to Chris Jack.

According to a writer writing on the Rangers Review website (22 February), the club plans to offer the central midfielder a new contract based on his performance this season.

Philippe Clement hopes to extend the former Sheffield United player’s contract beyond this summer. A new multi-year deal is expected to be signed within the next few weeks.

“The Rangers Review understands the club are committed to securing Lundstram’s services for next season and beyond and an agreement is likely in the coming weeks,” he stated in his letter.

Does John Lundstram deserve a new Rangers contract?

Lundstram has been an outstanding component of the Ibrox squad this season, and his form has improved significantly since Clement joined the club.

The midfielder turned 30 last month, and there were suspicions last season and at the start of this season that he might be on a downhill spiral as his play deteriorated.

His physical style and enthusiasm have proven crucial to the team’s success under the new manager’s leadership.

A multi-year contract, on the other hand, carries significant risk. We’ve seen the club make poor contract decisions in the past, and there’s no reason to believe he’ll continue to perform at this level for years.

However, it can be viewed the other way around, as a strategy to protect themselves by guaranteeing they can get a charge if he begins to drop off, rather than allowing him to depart for free.

In any case, Lundstram deserves a new contract based on his performance this season, and if Clement wants him to continue, he has won the fans’ and board’s trust.
