Bruins rookie dubs defenseman ‘Mr. Clutch’
Charlie McAvoy’s overtime goal against the Edmonton Oilers earned him a moniker from a rookie defenceman.
“C-Mac does that in overtime, don’t know how to explain it,” Mason Lohrei told reporters after the 6-5 victory in Edmonton. “Mr. Clutch.”
Oilers goalkeeper Stuart Skinner made a wonderful save on James van Riemsdyk’s shot before McAvoy made a hard attempt to get into the crease, extend the Bruins’ win run to two games, and get the four-game road trip started on a positive note.
Lohrei, who was recalled by Boston earlier this week, contributed three assists and 23:32 of ice time to the win. The rookie took over for Hampus Lindholm, who is sidelined with an unexplained ailment. Coach Jim Montgomery stated that surgery “wasn’t even an option” for the experienced blueliner, yet he did not travel.
The Bruins face the Calgary Flames on Thursday night at 9 p.m. EST in a rapid turnaround from their triumph on Wednesday.
The defense will be taxed as Matt Grzelcyk left the game at 65 seconds due to a skate slash. He required aid getting off the ice. Montgomery stated that Grzelcyk was “doing OK” and that he will be monitored on a daily basis.
