Alan Shearer has given his thoughts on Dan Burn keeping his spot at left-back in Newcastle United’s team despite come under a lot of criticism lately.

Burn has been through a difficult period as a result of the opposition scoring goals as a result of his defence against Luton and Nottingham Forest, which was mocked by some members of the fan base.

Shearer stated on BBC Radio Newcastle that while he understood Eddie Howe’s decision to keep Burn on the team, he also understood the calls for Tino Livramento to take his position.

Shearer says he ‘understands’ why Burn starts for Newcastle

Even when things aren’t going his way, Howe has never been one to make big changes to his club, and in spite of several cries for Burn’s replacement, he has chosen to keep him in the firing line to prove himself.

The 31-year-old has had difficulty keeping up with players like Chiedozie Ogbene and Anthony Elanga, who both only recently were able to take advantage of Burn’s speed to gain an edge and either create or score a goal.

The left-back let up a penalty against Luton after Ogbene raced past him, and Forest beat him even though he had a few yards advantage when the ball was put into his path, culminating in an equalising goal.

When the team lineups were revealed on Saturday, fans weren’t overly excited to see Burn’s name back in the starting lineup, but Shearer believes he understands Why Howe has stuck with the former Brighton player.

Shearer commented on Burn, saying, “I understand the criticism. I can see why Livramento is under pressure to start at left back.

However, I also recognise Eddie Howe for who he is and how much he values the things that have been done for him in the past. I see why he continues to play him.

“It was a big result for everyone [against Forest] because there would have been more pressure put on the discussion on Dan Burn if they hadn’t won, but because they did hopefully that will die down.”

Howe continuing to show faith in Burn

In all likelihood, Howe won’t start Livramento ahead of Burn in the starting lineup until the £13 million player is sidelined due to an injury or suspension.

Howe has always made calm, calculated decisions, so he’ll want to avoid starting a possible conflict in the changing room, even though he might be doing so by staying the same.

Although it has served him well thus far, the 46-year-old has frequently come under fire for lacking ruthlessness—something he will ultimately need to possess in order to reach the very top.

Shearer implies that he understands Howe’s motivation, but it’s clear that he recognises Livramento need to have an opportunity to justify his inclusion on the team and highlight his unique skills that Burn lacks.
