Sunderland confirms 23-year-old star is set to exit club

Sunderland are resigned to losing winger Jack Clarke in the summer transfer window, a report from Football Insider has claimed.

Over the past 18 months, Sunderland has had a lot of interest in former Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur player Clarke. Following the permanent extension of his Black Cats loan, the winger has been playing excellently, amassing 27 goals and 22 assists in 105 games for the team.

Once more, winter interest surfaced, but in the end, Clarke remained unmoved because no one was prepared to pay the asking amount. But while Wearside’s chances of making the playoffs are fading, more allegations regarding the 23-year-old’s future have surfaced.

According to Football Insider, Sunderland has accepted that Clarke will not return in the summer. The report also states that if they remain in the Championship, they’ll be more open to bids because Brentford, Burnley, and West Ham are all big fans.

Clarke is under contract with the Black Cats until the summer of 2026 though, so there should be no chance of him moving on the cheap.

Tough to hold onto Clarke?

Clarke is enjoying his second season of a starring role in the Championship. He’s been just about undroppable on the left-hand side again, managing 15 goals and four assists in 35 games across all competitions for Sunderland.

He more than demonstrated his ability at this level last season, having played a similar role. He’ll have to go up to a higher league, and it’s unlikely that he’ll stay with the Black Cats past the summer transfer window if they can’t provide better football at the Stadium of Light.

Clarke might return to the Premier League later this year since admirers should be in a better position to cough up in the summer. He will, however, be committed to helping Sunderland advance from 10th in the Championship table till then.
