Andy Burnham joked he is “still waiting” to hear back from Sky Sports regarding an interview on the points deduction farce at Everton.
An interview conducted late last year with the mayor of Greater Manchester and an Everton season ticket holder was taken down by the broadcaster.
Burnham responded with two words when asked on Twitter [20 February] why he hasn’t yet spoken with Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville on television.
“How can the @premierleague justify what they are doing to Everton Football Club?” Burnham continued.
We are still in the dark about what is going on, and another week is passing. We are being killed by them.
“Given the uncertainty they have created, I feel as a season ticket holder that the @premierleague have ruined this season for us and all clubs.”
“And now, when we ought to be commemorating the final era of English football greatness, they are enveloping Goodison in protest.” Not pardonable.
Everton points appeal verdict expected this week
The fact that Burnham expressed his disapproval of the Premier League in an interview with Sky Sports last year is particularly telling.
They were afraid of the consequences if they upset their greatest cash cow, the TV broadcaster, because of the league’s tight links to them. What aggravates Everton supporters so much is that.
Burnham, understandably enough, has been vocal about the issue and won’t let it go.
Recall that shortly after the points punishment judgement, Sky Sports also chose not to air footage of a protest banner that sailed above the Etihad Stadium during a match between Manchester City and Liverpool.
They can try to silence Everton fans all they want, but happily there are high-profile figures like Burnham ready to continue hammering the drum.
It is hoped that enough pressure has been applied to reverse the deduction at some point this week. Supporters should be commended greatly for their unwavering stance on the issue.
