49ers urged to sign Raiders wide receiver in potential ‘cap casualty’ move.

The San Francisco 49ers may make significant changes at wide receiver this summer, with a Las Vegas Raiders receiver being connected to a move. San Francisco is considering the future of Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, as well as Jauan Jennings’ free agent status this summer.

Hunter Renfrow has been identified as a potential addition by the scouting staff at Bleacher Report. Renfrow has been somewhat quiet over the last two seasons, but he is still fresh off his first and only Pro Bowl appearance.

“The 49ers should also consider adding depth and/or an insurance policy for Aiyuk, who may or may not receive an extension this offseason,” according to the article published on February 19, 2018. “Given the win-now makeup of San Francisco’s roster, adding a veteran like Curtis Samuel or Hunter Renfrow—a potential Raiders cap casualty or trade target—should be considered.”

Renfrow was one of the Raiders’ main weapons in the 2021 season. However, he is likely to leave Las Vegas due to decreased production and usage. While a trade could work, the 49ers or any other interested party may wait to see whether the Raiders release him.

If he is released, Renfrow would be an excellent value for a No. 3 or No. 4 receiver. Plus, he’s demonstrated the propensity to have top-tier seasons, so “buying low” could result in amazing value.Renfrow’s Raiders Run

Renfrow was selected in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He was a crucial contributor during Clemson’s two National Championship runs in 2016 and 2018, and the Raiders were looking for a proven winner. The 28-year-old receiver’s debut season paid off handsomely.

According to Pro Football Reference, he had 49 receptions for 605 yards and four touchdowns in 2019. Renfrow ceased operations in 2021 after another successful year in 2020. The former Clemson Tiger caught 103 catches, totaling 1038 yards and nine touchdowns.

Following his Pro Bowl selection, the Raiders extended his contract for two years and $32.3 million. Unfortunately, he has delivered only a fraction of his prior efforts.

Renfrow missed seven games in 2022 due to injury, catching only 36 catches for 330 yards and two touchdowns. However, he played every game in 2023 but only appeared on the field for 35% of the team’s offensive snaps. He finished the year with 25 receptions, 255 yards, and 0 touchdowns. Renfrow Could Take the 49ers WR Spot

If San Francisco does not re-sign Jauan Jennings, Renfrow will not be a comparable replacement. Jennings is five inches taller than Renfrow and is noted for his ability to go up and catch a pass.

While Renfrow does not have the same skill set, he is known for being a strong receiver through the catch. In fact, he has only six drops in the last four seasons and a career catch rate of 74.1%.

Mostly, the veracity of this recommendation is based on money.San Francisco is cash-strapped, and Jennings will most likely want a decent raise following another strong season and a breakout Super Bowl performance.

Neither player should be pricey, but Jennings is expected to receive more money than Renfrow. If Jennings is priced out, pairing Renfrow with 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy could be a cost-effective option.
