Unbelievable’ – Barry Ferguson blown away by Rangers star in fresh Ibrox ‘Scapegoat’ admission

Rangers: Barry Ferguson blown away by James Tavernier in new Ibrox ‘scapegoat’ admission.

Barry Ferguson believes Rangers captain James Tavernier has been unfairly targeted as a “scapegoat” after adding to his “unbelievable” goal record against St Johnstone.

The 32-year-old scored twice from the penalty spot in the Light Blues’ victory over Celtic on Sunday (18 February), propelling Philippe Clement’s side to the top of the Scottish Premiership standings for the first time this season.

Tavernier has already scored 12 Premier League goals this season and 120 for the Gers in total, a record described as “unbelievable” by Go Radio’s Paul Cooney, particularly given his role as a right-back.

On the Go Radio Football Show on Monday (February 19, 9:20), he stated, “The captain stepped up again.” 120 goals for that outstanding attacker, er, defense! It’s incredible!”

Ferguson swiftly agreed, saying: “I know a lot of them are penalties, but they are pressurised situations penalties, and I said it when he was getting a lot of flak, what a signing he has been for Rangers over the piece.”

“£300,000, as captain, there is some expectation to win trophies, and James Tavernier himself admits he hasn’t won enough, but some of his performances have been great.

“I’ve said that I thought that he was a scapegoat at times but 120 goals and I think he’ll go on for another couple of years.”

Can James Tavernier clinch a treble for Rangers at Ibrox?

Tavernier’s performance under Michael Beale was previously criticized by supporters and analysts, with some suggesting he should be sacked due to his poor form.

However, those calls have been significantly lacking since Clement arrived in Glasgow, with the 32-year-old going from strength to strength under the Belgian’s tutelage and leading the Light Blues’ recovery.

Although people will constantly remember the number of penalties he has scored when discussing his goal total, Tavernier has repeatedly stood up and been counted for his team, and his consistency from the spot deserves to be recognized.

The Rangers captain has shown no signs of slowing down at Ibrox, and while he may yet create history this season, he is expected to be a part of the team for many more years.
