However, should it be a negative outcome and there is little remuneration, it could spell immense danger for the Toffees. After all, last night was hardly an outstanding showing, in which they whimpered to snatch a late draw at home to a managerless Crystal Palace. The highlight likely came through Carragher’s pre and post-match analysis of the game and the Premier League’s key narratives at the moment, one of which was that deduction.

Speaking live on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the former Liverpool defender was relatively positive in his assessment of the appeal process, which concluded over two weeks ago now. There is nothing left for Everton and their fanbase to do now but hope, and today marks the potential emergence of that outcome.Carragher noted: ‘The big thing for me is that I think Everton will get something back, it could be two or three points maximum but there is a feeling within football in the last couple of days, people we have spoken to, that Nottingham Forest fear they are getting points taken off them for the situation they find themselves, so Everton are in the same boat as them. ‘Whether it’s exactly the same as them I don’t know. You get points back but you could get them taken off again. It’s not a good time to be an Evertonian right now.’

Playing like last night will not save Everton

Last night saw Everton welcome a Palace team that was therefore the taking. Without a permanent manager in the dugout, and Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi absent from the squad, Sean Dyche should have sent his team out to massacre their relegation-threatened visitors. However, what they posted instead was a flat, gutless performance in which they only really got going minutes before conceding the opener. There was no speed or urgency in their play, and it felt like the Eagles strolled to reclaim every second ball. Sat in the stands, Goodison Park threatened to boil over with the frustration such a performance provoked. Whether they get points back or not, the job will be far from over. Everton will have to play far better than they did last night if they are going to finish it off and crawl over the line once again.
