“I told you guys” – Philippe Clement makes £4.3m Rangers transfer declaration
Rangers did not appear to require any midfield reinforcements in the January transfer window, but the signing of Mohamed Diomande implies that we did.
The 22-year-old Ivorian is a highly skilled player who fits in well with the high-octane style of Gers manager Philippe Clement.
Rangers were surprised to see Mohamed Diomande score goals so fast in his Ibrox tenure. Clement explained why the versatile midfielder was targeted at his post-match press conference.
Mohamed Diomande, the Rangers’ master of all midfield trades
A loan-to-buy contract with a £4.3 million summer purchase option appears to be a sound investment.
Diomande demonstrates not just his ability to make a difference, but also his willingness to take on responsibility.
The player prefers the number eight position, as seen against St Johnstone. However, his work outside of possession displays his ability to manage the physicality of Scottish football.
When asked what Mohamed Diomande’s best position for Rangers is, the manager responded:
“I told you that he can play in all three midfield spots. We had many conversations with him about it. I also want to get to know the players well before they enter the building.
“So, I want guys who are available to the squad and don’t come just to play their particular game or position. Dio can comfortably play all three midfield spots.
“It’s good for him of course to feel directly really good in the team but it’s because of all the people around him also.”
The encouraging news is that he looked quite good at number 10 on his competitive debut.
However, alongside John Lundstram, Diomande appeared to be a natural, rather than a player who had only recently arrived.
He moved the ball quickly on a difficult playing surface, produced a fantastic opportunity for Fabio Silva, and was a continuous threat to the St Johnstone midfield.
As we’ve seen under Philippe Clement, attitude and work rate go a long way, and if Mohamed Diomande’s early performances for Rangers are any indication, it’s clear to see why the manager was so anxious to get him.
