‘Huge mistake’… Jamie Carragher suggests Farhad Moshiri has made a massive error at Everton

Everton’s ownership has been the laughing-stock of the Premier League in recent years, with their financial extravagance resulting in the gaping hole they currently find themselves in.

And whilst Farhad Moshiri must take the brunt of the blame, as the orchestrator who has forged this failure, there are many others who must also take their fair share of culpability. That being said, Jamie Carragher has always been keen to lambast the Iranian, recently dubbing him one of English football’s ‘worst-ever’ owners. It would be hard to argue with that notion. Now, speaking live on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the former Liverpool defender has once again sought to shed some light on the Toffees’ takeover process…

What Jamie Carragher said about Farhad Moshiri

With 777 Partners set to learn their fate imminently regarding their success in snagging Everton from Moshiri, alarm bells have been set off. After all, this is an institution shrouded in controversy and one which has hardly proved itself the fit and proper owners needed to take over such a famous club currently in such a state of disarray. But few can predict how the Premier League might act, as an erratic and confusing institution that stunned the footballing world when they lobbied for a 12-point deduction back in November. Well, Carragher has now outlined the issue with this new ownership, claiming: ‘There’s another problem in that they are basically getting funded and propped up by the group, 777 and they want to take over the club.

‘Even though there is a frustration with the Premier League in terms of the points deduction, the Premier League have not yet passed these as fit and proper owners. This should normally take between eight and 12 weeks. We are now 22 weeks in. ‘I think the chances of them getting passed as fit and proper owners, I’m not sure that’s going to happen. I’m not sure where that leaves Everton Football Club. ‘There’s no doubt Moshiri has checked out. If Everton go down you’re talking not just a team going down, you’re talking that could be close to administration. That’s how bad finances are right now. ‘That’s why I always go back to the owners in football. In terms of the points deduction and dealing with this group and not letting anybody else get involved. Almost like they have got exclusivity. That’s a huge mistake.’

Well, having started off this all-important week with a pitiful performance in a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, fans are hardly likely to be buoyed for the next seven days. Especially when they could play host to not only the outcome of their deduction appeal, but also regarding 777 Partners and their potential validity as owners. It could be argued that these two off-pitch decisions could have huge and far-reaching ramifications that span far beyond this campaign. After all, a lack of success in recouping some of their points could condemn a side already looking lost to further misery, later resulting in their relegation.

Then, as Carragher notes, the financial uncertainty of the Miami-based firm might see them come in and drive the club further into the ground, thus ending years of history and tradition. The Premier League must know what the right decisions are, but trusting them to make them is a completely different thing.
