Eddie Howe has been speaking about Joe White after the young midfielder made his Premier League debut for Newcastle United on Saturday.
Before returning in January, the 21-year-old Geordie made an impression at Crewe during his first half of the 2023–24 season, where he was on loan.
Howe insisted that White’s weekend cameo was well-earned and a reward for his outstanding performances in training, stating that White has “really matured” during his time away and has trained “really, really well.”
The Toon manager goes so far as to say that he’s been “almost like a new signing” and has gained his trust by contributing in the background and playing “really well” in his little on-field time during Saturday’s 2-2 draw.
“Talking individually about Joe, he’s come back from a loan spell and really matured.” Howe said. “That loan spell did him the world of good, and he’s trained really, really well.
“I’m quite happy with him. He’s practically like a new addition to our team, and naturally, you get my faith if you train effectively. I felt that he should make his Premier League debut on the pitch at this time. He performed pretty well, in my opinion, therefore I’m happy with him.
Although White’s contract expires in the summer of 2021, Howe’s remarks give us optimism that he may still follow in the footsteps of Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley by making the team.
