Under Mike Zimmer, the Cowboys will most likely have to move some guys.
Markquese Bell’s job could change under Mike Zimmer.
Markquese Bell joined the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He made a name for himself at Florida A&M while playing safety. He only appeared in five games and took 22 defensive snaps as a rookie (80 on special teams), but last season, Bell was moved to linebacker by former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
Bell would participate in all 17 games, making eight starts. He was productive, recording 94 tackles and two caused fumbles. His instincts and ability to breakdown plays quickly while running sideline to sideline and playing downhill were evident. However, despite his height of 6’3, Bell weighs just 205 pounds, making him an undersized NFL linebacker, particularly in a Mike Zimmer system that values size at the position.
The Cowboys’ playoff losses to the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers highlighted Bell’s size and lack of experience as a linebacker. He was not only pushed around, but he also struggled to stay diligent with his responsibilities. That is not surprising, given that he is inherently a safety.
Speaking of safety, Bell should return to that position under Mike Zimmer’s direction as the new defensive coordinator.
Bell’s 4.41 speed allows him to come down in the box and show run support, as evidenced by his college tape. He fared effectively as a single-high safety and was effective in both man and zone coverages, giving him scheme versatility. Plus, given his size, Bell is better suited to playing safety than linebacker.
Despite the need for more linebackers, the Cowboys have Damone Clark, who did not make the leap the team expected in 2023, but he still has a lot of potential. Also, don’t forget DeMarvion Overshown, who showed promise before hurting his ACL last preseason. The Cowboys will need to address the position through free agency and the draft, but they can survive if Bell returns to safety.
Bell’s linebacking experience had its ups and downs, but some of them were excellent. To realize his full potential, he must return to where his bread is buttered: safety.
What’s your take, BTB? Is Bell destined to play safety again under Mike Zimmer, or will his future be as a linebacker?
