Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool squad have paid tribute to a construction worker who died while working on Everton’s new stadium.
At Bramley Moore Dock, the Liverpool manager and his players paid respects to Michael Jones, 26, who passed away on Monday, by laying flowers.
After being hurt on the scene, the lifelong Everton supporter from Kirkby was taken to Aintree hospital, but he passed away soon after.
“Condolences from everyone at Liverpool Football Club. YNWA” is written on the wreath, and the players observed a minute of silence in Michael’s honour.
The statement “The loss of Michael Jones, a lifelong Evertonian who followed the Blues home and away, has left us all devastated” was used by Everton on Monday to convey their sorrow over Michael’s passing.
“The thoughts of everyone at Everton remain with Michael’s family, friends and colleagues. We will now be working with Michael’s family on an appropriate and lasting tribute. Michael Jones, forever in our hearts.”
Michael’s family said in a memorial posted on Tuesday: “We would like to express our gratitude to everyone for their continued support. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend Michael.”
Along with the outpouring of condolences on social media, Everton supporters organised a fundraising that has so far generated over £30,000 in response to Michael’s terrible passing.
This memorial can be seen on the fundraiser website, which is accessible here: “Michael was at work when an accident happened and he lost his life.”
“Michael was a massive Everton fan home and away with all his family and friends. Michael was so proud to be working on the project of building the new home of his beloved Everton.
“Elaine and Michael were Michael’s parents, and Michael was the brother of Terri, Gemma, and Katie. Many people know Michael, and they all have similar things to say about him. He was a charming young man with a kind heart who was always willing to spend time talking to anyone.”
To honour Michael Jones, Everton manager Sean Dyche visited Bramley-Moore Dock on Friday along with club ambassadors Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart. In our hearts for eternity.
The team stated: “Everyone at Everton Football Club is heartbroken by the news a male worker has died following an incident at the Everton Stadium site at Bramley-Moore Dock.”
“The thoughts and condolences of everyone connected with Everton are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this unimaginably sad time.”
