“It’s Incredible” Northern Ont. hockey player signs with Boston Bruins, gets first NHL goal in debut

Northern Ont. hockey player signs with Boston Bruins, gets first NHL goal in debut.

A 26-year-old from northeastern Ontario has made it to the big leagues of hockey, signing a two-year, two-way contract with the Boston Bruins on Sunday and scored his first NHL goal in his debut.

Brazeau made his NHL debut on Monday against the Dallas Stars.

He scored his first NHL goal just over a minute and a half into the second period, with a wrist shot that tied the game 2-2.

Justin Brazeau is from New Liskeard, Ontario, and recently turned 26.

The six-foot-five, 245-pound forward played four years for the North Bay Battalion before signing as a free agency with the Toronto Marlies in 2019.

He has played 189 AHL games, scoring 53 goals and 65 assists for a total of 118 points.

“Brazeau, 26, has skated in 49 games with Providence this season, recording 18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points,” the Bruins stated in a press release.

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said Monday morning that Brazeau’s annual NHL cap hit is $775,000.

The two-way contract is common for players entering the NHL for the first time, allowing them to continue earning their minor pro league income while waiting for the call up, which pays much more.

Brazeau’s AHL salary for the 2023/2024 season is $135,000, which will increase to $165,000 the following season.
