HSE leads investigation into death of Everton fan Michael Jones

The inquiry concerning the death of an Everton supporter who was working on the team’s new stadium is currently being handled by the Health and Safety Executive.

Michael Jones, a Kirkby resident and ventilation engineer, passed away on August 14, 2023, following an injury sustained at Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool, where Everton is constructing a new stadium.

Michael, 26, was caught between a beam and a piece of machinery, resulting in severe head injuries, according to testimony given at an inquest.

The hard hat that Mr. Jones, whose middle name was Goodison, was wearing was broken during the event, the court was informed.

The inquiry was postponed until February 29th, according to senior coroner Andrew Rebello, who described the investigation as “very complex and technical.”

Mersey Vent Ltd. employed Michael Jones, and Laing O’Rourke, the stadium contractor, will be invited to testify before the inquest.

“We have been a part of this inquiry from the beginning and we will continue to thoroughly investigate Michael’s tragic death as the lead agency,” HSE inspector John Padfield stated.

“This will aim to establish if there have been any breaches of health and safety law.

“We are in regular contact with Michael’s family and our thoughts remain with them at this time.”
