Ex-FIFA official adamant over referee decision in Rangers win v St Johnstone
Dermot Gallagher is certain that the referees correctly called both penalties as Rangers defeated St
Johnstone to take the top spot in the Scottish Premiership.
On Sunday, February 18, the Gers defeated the Blackhawks 3-0 at McDiarmid Park thanks to goals from
Mohamed Diomande and two James Tavernier penalties.
VAR intervened on both occasions – the first for Andy Considine’s sliding challenge on Dujon Sterling;
the second for a Luke Robinson handball.
Speaking on the first incident on February 19 at 11:55 a.m. on Sky Sports News, Gallagher stated: “VAR
has the right to step in and advise the referee to go look at it, but it’s a penalty.” He gains possession of
the player rather than the ball.
Gallagher said, “His hand is out,” in reference to the handball. When you extend your hand, the referee
will always penalize you.
Rangers and Celtic lead way for penalties
The referee somehow failed to award Rangers a penalty initially for the challenge on Sterling, but
thankfully that is what VAR is there for.
The handball decision is also one that rightly went in the Gers’ favour, with both spot-kicks being tucked
away by the ever-reliable Tavernier.
Many will point to bias as Rangers have now been awarded 11 penalties in the Scottish Premiership this
season, while Celtic have 12.
