Clement must now ditch Rangers wasteful dud who was worse than Dessers vs Saints.
Glasgow Rangers were aware that they would surpass Celtic and take the top spot in the league table if they defeated St Johnstone in the Premiership yesterday. Before the game, Philippe Clement didn’t need to have a lengthy team talk because all of the players understood the stakes, and they performed admirably on the field.
Just before the half, a goal by Mohamed Diomande calmed any jitters, and the Gers lead by one goal going into the break. The three points were all that counted, but James Tavernier surprised everyone by scoring two penalties in the last ten minutes to give the team a convincing 3-0 victory over the Saints.
With the same number of games played and, more importantly, a superior goal differential, the outcome guaranteed the Light Blues’ ascent to the top. They currently lead their Old Firm opponents by two points. Even though they played well, certain players missed their opportunities during the match, and Cyriel Dessers had a subpar cameo in the second half.
Cyriel Dessers was poor once again for Rangers
The 29-year-old striker struck the woodwork and wasted four clear opportunities in the team’s match against Ross County last week, but he also scored his first brace for the team. With more clinical play, he might have easily scored five or six goals. This has let him down during his time in Glasgow, and so far in the 2023–24 Premiership season, Dessers has blown an incredible 20 great opportunities, demonstrating a lack of ruthlessness in the opposition penalty area.
The former Feyenoord forward replaced Fabio Silva for the final 21 minutes of the match against the Saints, but despite hitting the woodwork, missing three clear opportunities, and only making five passes, he only scored a 4.8/10 Sofascore rating for his brief appearance. Dessers might have easily reached 25 goals for the season by now if he had a more vicious streak. It was another wasteful display.
A few fairly ludicrous rumors surfaced on social media around the close of the winter season, implying that Philippe Clement’s team was hoping to add Oscar Cortes, a deadline-day acquisition, and one of the best strikers in Europe in addition to Mohamed Diomande.
