‘A step too far’: Gary Neville slams Nottingham Forest over Mark Clattenburg appointment

Gary Neville has criticised Nottingham Forest for selecting former official Mark Clattenburg to serve as a referee analyst, calling the move ’embarrassing’.

Forest announced this week that the former Premier League referee will be joining them as a consultant to help them better comprehend calls and interact with officials.

Clattenburg, who most recently officiated the BBC’s revival of Gladiators, watched the team’s 2-0 victory over West Ham on Saturday from the director’s box at the City Ground.

Neville has criticised the addition of Clattenburg, saying that Forest has overreached themselves despite having made some contentious officiating decisions this season.

“For a start, I actually think in the last four, five, or six weeks we haven’t talked too much about VAR,” he remarked in an interview with The Gary Neville Podcast. There have been a few strange decisions made here and there, but overall, I think the quality of the decisions has improved significantly.

Every team that receives a poor decision will complain. We used to be very whiny.

What, though, is Mark Clattenburg up to? Mark and I collaborated; how are you doing?

“You have been hired to go to a football club and report on the mistakes that referees are making, or how they are making mistakes.” Really, it’s very evident. You could find out exactly what a referee is thinking from a fan in the stands.

“I’m disappointed with Nottingham Forest because I usually have 99 percent faith in the intent of referees or officials.”

“It seems to be saying, “Woe is me, look at all this.” I understand that occasionally during a season, certain teams feel that they’ve been treated unfairly or that poor judgements have been made against them.

It would have annoyed me. You’re talking to someone who would have been incensed even if we had only one poor choice go wrong, much less three or four.

Nevertheless, I believe it goes too far to hire a former referee to explain to you why judgements are being made against you.

This isn’t meant as a jab at Nottingham Forest supporters, though I imagine some will find it embarrassing. They won’t like the decisions that don’t go in their favour, but they also won’t stand there and believe the club made a great decision

“I don’t like it,” he continued. It appears that the clubs’ attitudes towards the referees have altered; they now practically seem to be seeking retaliation, revenge, or some other outcome.
