‘Run It Back!’: Do Cowboys & Gilmore Want The Same Thing?

The Dallas Cowboys pairing Stephon Gilmore and Trevon Diggs together in the secondary sent tongues wagging during the offseason, but as we know, Diggs’ injury early in the year poured cold water on the idea.
Every year, it is our responsibility to determine what has to be changed—whether it be with the team or the employees. In order to ensure that the correct guys are seated in the appropriate places, we have worked extremely hard and given it a lot of thought. It’s time to get to work now, Day stated on Friday from the workshop hosted by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association.

Day and Kelly were acquainted as Day was Kelly’s teammate at New Hampshire while Kelly was the head coach there. As Kelly’s quarterback coach, Day also worked with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.

“I want to come back … that’s the goal because I think we do got the pieces to get to where we want to go and I want to be part of that,” Gilmore said on KTCK-AM. “I want to run it back with (Brandin) Cooks, all these guys. Great players on the team. Have an opportunity to play with [DaRon] Bland another year and (Trevon Diggs) is coming back off an ACL.”

The next issue is Gilmore’s rehab from shoulder surgery. How does that factor into what Dallas wants to do? What if it’s a sixth-month rehab … for a guy about to turn 34?

That’s why we hesitate when we see how in CBS Sports’ ranking of the top 25 NFL defensive free agents, “Gilly” lands at No. 20.

Stephon Gilmore sends clear message to Cowboys ahead of 2024 free agency

His highs are super-high, which makes sense considering he’s earned Pro Bowl nods with three different teams, CBS Sports wrote. “Even at 33, Gilmore had a few vintage lockdowns for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023.”

Again, Gilmore has already stated his desire to return to the Cowboys in 2024, but having undergone shoulder surgery that will require around five months of rehab causes us to think of him as something shy of a “priority.”

Is it possible for Dallas to wait if they plan to resign him? Will an early signing be viewed as a risk by other teams?

Additionally, should Gilmore return, there’s a strong chance it won’t be as a starter—in Mike Zimmer’s defense, he could easily be the third choice—because of Diggs’ return and the rise of DaRon Bland.

How is a non-starter “prioritized”?

Gilmore shown that he still had some gas left in him, but we’re putting the brakes on this one because of his advanced age, his recent shoulder surgery, Diggs, and Bland.

Spotrac.com has his market value at $11.1 million APY, and we say that is a number Dallas won’t pay. And that’s why we view with skepticism the “ranking lists” that are failing to take into account Cowboys realities.
