Piemonte and Galli seal first home win for Everton

Martina Piemonte and Aurora Galli’s late goals gave Everton its first home victory in the Women’s Super League this season.

Piemonte, a second-half substitute, headed in a Galli free kick in the 83rd minute to open the score in a closely contested match.

With four minutes remaining, Piemonte set up fellow Italian Galli, who sent a strong shot into the upper corner. Everton’s victory at Walton Hall Park snapped a four-game losing streak in the WSL.
With greater assurance, West Ham started the match, and Katrina Gorry blasted a low effort that went just past the post. Viviane Asseyi believed she had put the Hammers ahead a few moments later when she made an attempt at the back post before it was hooked away.

taken by Megan Finnigan, yet the authorities concluded there had been a violation. In the first half, Everton used clever passing to move the ball around, but too often their excellent build-up play was ineffective, and they were unable to put Mackenzie Arnold, the West Ham goalkeeper, to the test.

At the end of the half, Riko Ueki had a close attempt for the Hammers, missing by just a few inches with her bold shot from the corner of the box. In the second half, Kristie Mewis, a dynamic player whose directness posed a threat to the Hammers, was changed by both teams.

Just when it looked like the game might end in a draw, Everton took the lead. From a free kick, Galli lofted a high ball into the box, and Piemonte, a replacement in the 74th minute, leaped highest to

head the ball over Arnold’s bare feet. Soon after, Galli raced in from the right flank and made a spectacular effort to score Everton’s second, and Arnold was powerless to stop it. The sole setback for Everton manager Brian Sorensen was that Karoline Olesen, the substitute, had a major injury and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher, which caused a significant delay in additional time.
