Rangers make new deal for “outstanding” Ibrox star a top priority.
Rangers have prioritized the contract renewal of one of Philippe Clement’s key players, despite their concentration on the Scottish Premiership title chase.
Rangers transfer news
After a successful January transfer window in which Oscar Cortes, Mohamed Diomande, and Fabio Silva all arrived on loan, Rangers’ focus appears to have shifted to probable summer departures, as Clement attempts to make his mark at Ibrox. After such a successful four months in charge, the former AS Monaco manager has earned the right to make some changes and implement his vision.
Kemar Roofe, Borna Barisic, and Jon McLaughlin are expected to go as they are out of contract this summer and are unlikely to sign new contracts before then. The departure of Barisic will be especially frustrating for the Gers, who only have one other first-team left-back, Ridvan Yilmaz, whose future is uncertain.
However, John Lundstram may not be among the many free agents who may leave Ibrox in the coming months. According to previous rumors, Rangers planned to offer Lundstram a new deal. According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Rangers are prioritizing Lundstram’s new contract and are currently in talks to secure his long-term future at Ibrox.
Lundstram, a former Sheffield United player, has gained support from Clement, who wants to keep him in Scotland. The Rangers manager has already praised his midfielder, saying:
“Outstanding” Lundstram is a key player under Clement
Lundstram, an experienced midfielder, is now an important player under Clement at Rangers, to the point where it’s rare for the 29-year-old to be left out of the starting lineup these days. Lundtstram has only missed two Scottish Premiership games this season, starting 22 and coming off the bench once. If Rangers are to complete their title comeback, Lundstram might be at the center.
Chris Wilder praised the midfielder’s skills after Sheffield United’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in 2020.
“I have to say, I thought John Lundstram was fantastic when he came on. He joined the team for a few games. He’s been fantastic for us. His energy levels have fallen, but we have true competition, and John understands that.”
However, if Rangers secure Lundstram’s future with the club, it could be viewed as one of their most underappreciated moves.
Of course, if the title battle turns in the Gers’ favour, the former Premier League player might be crowned Scottish Premiership winner before long.
