Rangers make new deal for “outstanding” Ibrox star a top priority
Rangers have apparently made the contract renewal of one of Philippe Clement’s key players a major
priority, even though their focus will rightfully be on the Scottish Premiership title fight considering that
they now sit level on points with Celtic and only behind on goals scored.
News about Rangers transfers
Following a productive January transfer window that saw the arrivals on loan of Oscar Cortes, Mohamed
Diomande, and Fabio Silva, Rangers’ focus appears to have shifted to possible summer departures as
Clement attempts to establish himself at Ibrox. After such an outstanding four months in charge, the
former AS Monaco manager has earned the right to make some adjustments and put his ideas into
action.
Among those who look set to leave are Kemar Roofe, Borna Barisic and Jon McLaughlin, who are all out
of contract this summer and reportedly unlikely to sign a new deal before then. Barisic will be a
particularly frustrating loss, given that the Gers have just one other first-team left-back to call on
in Ridvan Yilmaz, whose future is also in doubt.
The flurry of free agents leaving Ibrox in the coming months may not include John Lundstram, however.
Previous reports suggested that Rangers were set to offer Lundstram a new contract. Now though,
according to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Rangers have made Lundstram’s new contract their top
priority and talks are well underway as they look to secure the midfielder’s Ibrox future once and for all.
Reportedly keen to stay put in Scotland, Lundstram has earned a fan in Clement, who is also eager to
keep hold of the former Sheffield United man. Praising his midfielder, the Rangers boss previously said:
“He is important in many ways. He is someone who never hides. He always wants the ball. He
understands the tactical study we want to do every game, he changes every game to try and find spaces.”
“Outstanding” Under Clement, Lundstram is an important player.
Experienced in midfield, Lundstram has developed into a vital member of Rangers’ squad under
Clement; in fact, it’s rare these days for the 29-year-old to be out of the starting lineup. Throughout the
season, Lundtstram has really only missed two Scottish Premiership games—starting 22 of them and
making one appearance off the bench. Lundstram could be pivotal if Rangers are to successfully win the
title again.
Chris Wilder, who praised the midfield player following Sheffield United’s 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace
in 2020, was well aware of the player’s abilities.
