Rangers cancel Celtic fans’ allocation for SWPL showdown – what both clubs had to say.
It appears that there are problems with ticket distribution for Old Firm games outside of the men’s game as Rangers cancelled Celtic’s away ticket for this weekend’s SWPL meeting on Saturday. Sunday’s top-of-the-table showdown between Rangers and Celtic’s women’s teams will take place at Ibrox and be televised live on BBC Alba. Rangers lead their Glasgow rivals by four points at the top of the SWPL.
Rangers has reportedly canceled all of the tickets that Celtic fans had purchased. The Ibrox club said that they were aware of high-risk fans who were planning to attend, which would have necessitated a large police presence. “Intelligence received by Rangers and Celtic suggested groups of ‘risk’ supporters in a significant number had purchased tickets from the Celtic allocation,” the Rangers stated.
“Rangers called an urgent operational meeting between both clubs and Police Scotland, with Police Scotland indicating they would need to deploy a sizeable resource at short notice.”The open, family-friendly environment of the women’s game is one of its distinctive selling points. The decision to cancel all tickets was made when Rangers’ security staff determined it would be dangerous to let these “risk” supporters into the stadium and Celtic refused to cancel merely their tickets.”
Celtic called the decision “hugely disappointing” and said that they would get in touch with Rangers to work out a reimbursement. “The decision to deny access to so many fans is hugely disappointing, especially given that the home club had a number of options available to allow our fans to attend in a stadium of such capacity and given the expected crowd,” a statement from Celtic said. “At a time when so many are working so hard to promote and support the women’s game in Scotland.”
