Sources: Jon McLaughlin is anticipated to depart the Rangers following board meetings.
Football Insider has received information from sources indicating that veteran Rangers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin will leave Ibrox for free in May.
The 36-year-old Gers star’s contract expires later this year, and negotiations to extend it have not yet begun.
McLaughlin is thought to be surplus to requirements and the Rangers board is prepared to let him go.
Football Insider has been informed by a reliable source that the Glasgow giants believe they can let him go because 2023 acquisition Jack Butland is starting to establish himself as the team’s first choice goalkeeper.
McLaughlin is yet to be included in a matchday squad this season and has not played a single minute for Rangers in the 2023–24 campaign.
Since Robby McCrorie was elevated to the position of second-choice shot-blocker, he has seen less playing time.
McLaughlin made 16 appearances in all competitions the previous season, giving up 18 goals and maintaining eight clean sheets.
The veteran even played for Rangers in the Champions League, helping them advance to the group stage.
Butland was acquired on a free transfer the summer before last year, following Allan McGregor’s retirement.
In 2020, McLaughlin signed a free agent contract from Sunderland and has since made 46 appearances for the team.
He will not be given the opportunity to sign a new contract at Ibrox; he signed his last extension in January 2022.
This season, Rangers and Glasgow rivals Celtic are squarely in the running for the crown, thanks in large part to star player Butland.
The Ibrox team has 13 league games left in the 2023–24 season, and they are only behind the Hoops in goals scored.
In other reports, after a bid was made, Rangers are considering moving for a Championship striker.
