Houston Astros’ Superstar Unlikely to Accept Extension According to Agent

Houston Astros’ Superstar Unlikely to Accept Extension According to Agent.

It appears that the Houston Astros may lose one of their franchise cornerstones after this season.

The Houston Astros are anticipated to be one of the greatest teams in baseball this season after returning nearly the same squad from last year, with Josh Hader as the marquee addition.

A third World Series championship would establish the Astros’ dynasty as one of the best in MLB history.

This year may also mark the end of another franchise cornerstone’s stay with the team.

Alex Bregman, one of the sport’s best third basemen, will be a free agency following the 2024 season and is expected to be pursued by a number of teams.

That is, assuming Houston even allows him to enter free agency.

They could offer him a contract extension, as they did with Jose Altuve, who was also about to become a free agent at the end of the year, but there has been no action on that front despite comments from both sides.

Dana Brown stated that they will offer Bregman an extension, but there is no deadline for getting something done.

The anticipated time period is before the Astros host the New York Yankees on March 28 for Opening Day. Typically, players do not want to engage with contract discussions during the season.

However, even if an extension is given, Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, does not believe he will accept it.

“Boras stated that Bregman’s circumstance is very different from that of Altuve… According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, Bregman, who turns 30 next month, will seek to maximize his worth.

That is pretty normal.

Boras prefers his clients to enter free agency and see how much money they will be offered.

However, Bregman may be an exception.

He has only spent time with Houston since being selected second overall in the 2015 draft and has voiced a desire to return.

Much of this will be determined by how much the Astros offer him when they finally make an offer. If it’s a lowball offer, it wouldn’t be unexpected to see him reach the open market after the season.
