Much-maligned Rangers player now outperforming £30m-rated Celtic star this season

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers is outperforming much-heralded Celtic rival Kyogo Furuhashi in the Scottish Premiership so far this season.

Ibrox summer signing Cyriel Dessers, 28, has been the subject of much criticism this season but since the appointment of Philippe Clement the hitman has turned a corner in Glasgow.Netting another double in the midweek win over Ross County – although the striker could’ve probably had at least four – Dessers now has 14 goals this season, including 10 in the Scottish Premiership.Comparatively, Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi has netted eight times in the Scottish top flight this campaign, the Japanese striker’s last league goal coming in December’s Old Firm clash.

Cyriel Dessers Rangers resurgence

Signed for a reported £4.5m from Cremonese, there was much criticism of Cyriel Dessers in the early part of his Rangers career. With the Gers having let go of Alfredo Morelos, the Belgian-born Nigerian international was signed as the club’s new number 9.Under Michael Beale the forward certainly looked on course to be a flop but credit to Cyriel, the ex-Feyenoord striker has turned a corner with the Rangers fans now singing his name.In recent memory it’s hard to recall such a dramatic transformation of a Rangers career in such a short period of time and the goals speak for themselves as the Ibrox club haul themselves into a title race.

Ibrox striker outscoring Kyogo Furuhashi

As for the comparisons with Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi, it exemplifies Cyriel Dessers’ Rangers resurgence that he’s now overtaken the Parkhead forward in the Premiership scoring charts. It’s worth noting that Lawrence Shankland (17) and Bojan Miovski (13) have scored more than both players, so neither are the division’s top scorer. But whilst plenty have written Cyriel Dessers off as a dud, Kyogo Furuhashi is considered by many to be the division’s strongest forward player. And it’s not without good reason. The Celtic striker is a big game player and big goal scorer – having netted seven in the last calendar year against Rangers for example – and this is why we’re constantly hearing the Parkhead side have an attacking cutting edge over us.Until Cyriel Dessers starts being an Old Firm matchwinner, we suspect there won’t be the sorts of £30m price tags which have been attached to Kyogo Furuhashi. But with Dessers finally finding his feet in Glasgow, his Old Firm credentials will be put the test soon.
