The UEFA club rankings have been updated and AC Milan have risen further thanks to the results that they have accrued this season, catching a domestic rival.
Milan jumped up the rankings after defeating Rennes last night at San Siro in the first leg of the Europa League play-off round, as our friends at SempreMilan.it wrote.
In reality, with a coefficient of 54,000, the Rossoneri have finally caught up to Lazio, who defeated Bayern Munich on Wednesday in the Champions League. Lazio is currently in 30th place.
Milan finished the previous season in 36th place with a coefficient of 50,000, having, of course, advanced to the Champions League semifinals.
The Italian teams ranked sixth in the UEFA rankings are Milan and Sarri’s group, behind Inter (6th), Roma (10th), Juventus (16th), Napoli (17th), and Atalanta (22nd). Place 60 belongs to Fiorentina.
With a coefficient of 143,000, Manchester City—the current European Champions—remains at the top of the new standings. After losing to Milan at San Siro in the group stage, PSG is no longer on the podium and is replaced by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Liverpool is in fifth position, Chelsea is in tenth, and Inter is in seventh. Next up is RB Leipzig. Manchester United and Roma complete the top ten.
The other encouraging news is that Italy is ranked #1 in the UEFA Nations Ranking. The top two nations in this unique ranking will receive five, not four, spots in the upcoming UCL, per the new regulations for the 36-team Champions League.
Italy are top on 14,285, followed by England at 13,875 and well behind are Germany, who would remain with four teams in the Champions League.
1. Italy 14,285
2. England 13,875
3. Germany 13,642
4. Spain 12,937
5. Czech Republic 12,000
6. France 11,916
7. Belgium 11,600
A country can qualify for a bonus team in the Champions League by winning the current edition of either of the two major UEFA tournaments, the Champions League or the Europa League, in addition to finishing first or second in the UEFA Ranking.
A nation would still be eligible for five teams even if it were to win one of the two trophies and hold the top two spots in the rankings simultaneously. This is because the factors cannot be combined.
