What Bill O’Brien stated at the initial Boston College press conference on Ohio State’s Ryan Day
Columbus, Ohio — When Jeff Hafley departed Boston College for the Green Bay Packers, Bill O’Brien claimed he was looking at houses in the Columbus area and getting ready to start his new job as offensive coordinator for Ohio State football.

Following his first news conference on Thursday, O’Brien told reporters, “my phone blew up a little bit” that evening. “The procedure got underway the following day.”

O’Brien eventually left the Buckeyes after just three weeks in order to take over the Eagles as a result of that procedure. After his two stints with the New England Patriots, he maintained more ties to the area, and his wife is a graduate of Boston College.

Coach Ryan Day of Ohio State moved swiftly to appoint Chip Kelly as O’Brien’s successor. However, Day was thrilled to discover a coach with the NFL and head coaching experience he desired when O’Brien was hired, as it would be his first time turning over play calling and offensive oversight.

O’Brien thanked Day for his understanding as the Boston College story unfolded in his opening remarks. He said that if the Boston College hiring had fallen through, Day would have permitted him to stay at OSU. In the end, O’Brien described the position as “a no-brainer” because of his football chances and familial links.

O’Brien expressed his gratitude to Ohio State’s head football coach Ryan Day for his compassion and patience in helping him understand why it was crucial for him to hire him. Ryan Day is a well-known figure among the Boston College community. Ryan Day is an exceptional individual and coach, and he was wonderful throughout the entire process.

When he first started working at OSU, according to O’Brien, he drove the ten hours to Columbus. That drive back was something he had to do last Friday.

O’Brien remarked, “It wasn’t horrible, though.” “Ohio children ought to enjoy visiting Boston College.”
