What Bill O’Brien said about Ohio State’s Ryan Day at first Boston College press conference.
Ohio — When Jeff Hafley left Boston College for the Green Bay Packers, Bill O’Brien claimed he was looking at houses in the
Columbus area and getting ready to start his new job as offensive coordinator for Ohio State football.
Following his first press conference on Thursday, O’Brien told reporters, “My phone blew up a little bit” that evening.
“The procedure got underway the following day.”
O’Brien eventually left the Buckeyes after just three weeks as a result of that procedure in order to take over the Eagles.
After his two stints with the New England Patriots, he maintained more ties to the area, and his wife is a graduate of Boston College.
Coach Ryan Day of Ohio State moved swiftly to appoint Chip Kelly as O’Brien’s successor.
However, Day was thrilled to discover a coach with the NFL and head coaching experience he desired when
O’Brien was hired, as it would be his first time turning over play calling and offensive oversight.
In his introductory remarks, O’Brien thanked Day for his patience while the Boston College scenario unfolded.
He said that if the Boston College hiring had fallen through, Day would have permitted him to stay at OSU.
In the end, O’Brien described the position as “a no-brainer” because of his football chances and familial links.
“I really want to thank Ryan Day, the head football coach at Ohio State, for his patience and his understanding of why it was so
important for me to pursue this job,” O’Brien said in a statement. “Many individuals here at Boston College are familiar with Ryan
Day. Ryan Day is an exceptional person and coach, and he was fantastic throughout this entire process.”
O’Brien stated that when he first started at OSU, he drove the 10-hour trek to Columbus. He had to make the drive back last Friday.
“It wasn’t bad, though,” O’Brien added. “Kids from Ohio should enjoy coming to Boston College.”
