Despite winning at Ibrox, Rabbi Matondo’s Rangers player ratings against Ross County are a 4/10 stinker.
Rangers’ 3-1 victory over Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday, February 14, was all they could muster in order to stay above Celtic.
Thanks to two goals from Cyriel Dessers and a late header from John Souttar, the Light Blues secured all three points and drew level with the Hoops at the top of the league. On goals scored, Philippe Clement’s team will still be in second place.
The Gers should have been out of sight much earlier in the game since they missed numerous great opportunities to extend their lead. Despite this, they will be happy to have continued their winning streak under the Belgian at Ibrox.
The players have been ranked out of ten by Ibrox News;
Jack Butland, age six
The Englishman was seldom faced with a save and was powerless to stop the goal thundered in from close range by the opposition. He deserved a calm evening after his stellar efforts this season, and he would have been grateful for the remainder.
The Rangers captain, as usual, made several excellent passes and might have finished with more than three assists if the Gers had improved their finishing. The right-back has been playing at his peak since Clement came, and if the Gers win the championship, he’ll play a huge part in that. Didn’t have loads to do defensively and wasted a couple of reasonable set-piece opportunities but all in all, it was another good display from the Rangers captain.
Connor Goldson, age six
was unable to apply enough pressure as the ball was crossed into the penalty area and was too slow to respond to the long ball that led to the visiting team’s first-half equalizer. kept his team under pressure in the first forty-five minutes by hacking a few clearances. became better as the game went on, making a few crucial interventions, but a clean sheet would have been preferred.
He rescued himself with a late goal after playing a largely ineffectual defense. The Scotsman was caught off guard and handled the long ball far too slowly, which allowed the opposite team to score the equalizer. The Gers defense was tested in the second half by a few of incredibly careless touches, so it’s perhaps a good thing that no more mistakes were called for. Souttar has been in and out of the squad this season, but the late goal has most likely kept him on the roster.
Ridvan Yilmaz, position 7.
The Turkish fullback has been playing well lately, and he poses a major threat going forward thanks to his many outstanding passes into the penalty area. Like the other backs, Yilmaz didn’t have a lot of defensive duties, but when he did, he gave it everything he had off the ball.
When fit and available, few look better than the Welshman in a blue jersey. The midfielder was good when he played in a deeper midfield position with John Lundstram, even if he never reached above second gear. Given that he wasted multiple long-range opportunities to put the goalie to the test, perhaps he ought to have been more focused in front of goal.
John Lundstram – 7
Once more, the former Sheffield United star opened the bottom block in County by showcasing his incredible midfield range and his consistent, if not spectacular, passing ability. Even though he might not be the most exciting player, the Englishman is dependable every week, therefore the Light Blues should get ready for his next deal.
Ross McCausland – 6
It was a quiet evening by McCausland’s standards, as he failed to capitalize on some great possession in the final part of the game. An important defensive play to keep the score tied in the final 20 minutes. The young Rangers youngster had a decent afternoon, but supporters have seen him play much better this season.
used in a more offensive capacity once more, and he thrived in the number 10 position, right behind the center striker. was twice thwarted by some incredible saves, but he also made several amazing passes that left an impression. finished off a fantastic performance at Ibrox by working hard both inside and outside of the ball. The Englishman is back to his best. I hope he can carry that form into the major games in the latter part of the season.
had a couple strong moments on the left side, but wasted a lot of time searching for teammates and shooting shots at the goal. was replaced at halftime, probably to limit his playing time, although the Welsh international had a somewhat underwhelming performance. If he want to consistently play better than Oscar Cortes, he will need to make improvements.
Seven Cyriel Dessers
Giving the Nigerian a poor mark for just two goals seems harsh, but given how many opportunities he missed, he really ought to have finished with six or seven. Although both of Rangers’ finishes are commendable, can a striker who is so inefficient in front of goal help the team win a championship?
His straightforward approach impressed me and created a lot of issues for the left flank. Potentially a great discovery for the Gers down the road.
7 Fabio Silva
Scott Wright: 6
N/A Mohamed Diomande
Rangers lose the opportunity to surpass Celtic.
Rangers’ assignment for the coming Wednesday was to attempt to surpass Celtic. Even though they won all three points at Ibrox, they would have preferred to score more goals in the closing minutes to put themselves ahead of their Glasgow rivals.
The crucial aspect was that the Light Blues managed to stay on level footing with Brendan Rodgers’ team at the top of the table, avoiding what may have been a banana skin situation.
The final game of the season between the two Glasgow teams might very well be a shootout.
In other Rangers news, Andy Walker called Connor Goldson out for his “dangerous” and “reckless” performance.
