Sunderland have been slammed after a disastrous defeat to Huddersfield Town.

Sunderland went into the match having won their last three games at home against Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City with six goals.

They were defeated 1-0 at John Smith’s Stadium tonight, demonstrating that their poor road performance still exists.

An avoidable free-kick caused Anthony Patterson to parry it poorly, allowing Matty Pearson to score the game’s lone goal.

Sunderland, who made little significant progress in the second half, would have been severely embarrassed had Huddersfield not been able to add a couple of goals to their score.

Journalist Michael Graham harshly blasted Michael Beale’s team for their lacklustre performance after the Black Cats dropped to tenth place in the Championship table.

He wrote on X: “Nowhere near good enough from #SAFC. Slow, ponderous, creating nothing and concede an incredibly soft goal. It happens far too often, and they’re an irritating team to watch when it does.”

He followed it up with another post that read: “Worst performance of the season for me.”

Another embarrassing day for Sunderland

Huddersfield Town did something to Sunderland that hasn't been done in 63 years

After their decisive victory over Plymouth the previous Saturday, Sunderland would have been full of confidence after yet another catastrophe of a game.

Few players stood out from tonight’s contest, and it was amazing how many of them went from appearing so powerful against the Pilgrims in the second half to playing so poorly this time around.

It hurts to see how little we have improved since our last defeat at the hands of Huddersfield in November, when we may have played a bit better.

After some recent victories, Michael Beale had begun to gain some leeway, but his performance tonight has put him squarely back in the firing line—his substitutions were also subpar.

The 43-year-old faces intense pressure to perform well against Birmingham City the following game because a beating at the hands of our previous manager will not go down well.

Even while there is still a small space between us and the play-offs, we don’t seem to be taking advantage of it and instead keep falling short.

The fact that Patrick Roberts was forced to walk down the tunnel due to an injury, leaving us with just 10 men, makes the embarrassing performance and outcome much worse.
