Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has caught the eye this season after striking up an impressive partnership with James Tarkowski.

The duo have been the cornerstone of the Toffees’ rock-solid backline, which has registered eight clean sheets during the 2023/24 season, the second most in the Premier League.Branthwaite, 21, is one of Everton’s most valuable assets. He’s young, has loan experience and is now playing regularly in a successful defensive unit. The former Carlisle youngster has received plenty of praise, with Alan Shearer in awe of the defender’s performance during the Toffees 1-0 away win over West Ham United back in October.“Magnificent at the back. Nothing got past him against West Ham,” the Newcastle United legend told the Premier League’s official website.Unfortunately for Everton, Branthwaite’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed. Manchester United have been linked with the 21-year-old, and the latest update to emerge from Old Trafford could be bad news for Everton.

Manchester United reshuffle could be bad news for Everton

After a long-winded process, the Premier League and FA have proposed Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s proposed bid to buy a minority stake in United. The owner of INEOS has made no secret of his desire to shake things up at Old Trafford. The iPaper suggests that United’s new minority owner is eager to add a data-driven aspect to their recruitment.A new sporting director is also on the agenda, with Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth reportedly being headhunted.

As per The Daily Mail, the two clubs are set to reach an agreement next week. Ashworth is known for savvy recruitment, having previously spent time with Brighton and West Bromwich Albion. If the Newcastle chief does move south, United’s recruitment process would immediately improve, heightening their chances of landing Branthwaite. The Old Trafford decision-makers have been notoriously poor in recent years; it looks like it’s about to change. With new processes in place, Everton should brace themselves for intense interest in their star man.For now, the youngster will be looking to enjoy a steady second half of the season under Sean Dyche’s stewardship. If Branthwaite and Tarkowski remain fit, Everton’s defensive record should be enough to steer them clear of the bottom three.
