Rangers: Steven Thompson ‘can’t believe’ what Cyriel Dessers did in win v Ross County.
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has left. Steven Thompson was perplexed by a miss in the first half of the Light Blues’ victory over
Ross County at Ibrox.
The Nigerian forward scored twice as Philippe Clement’s side won 3-1 at Ibrox on Wednesday (February 14), with John Souttar’s
late header keeping all three points in Glasgow.
However, the Gers could have been much more comfortable, with Dessers, in particular, missing numerous golden chances to add
to his tally, and BBC Sportscene’s Thompson lambasted the centre-forward in a new Lawrence Shankland admission.
On BBC Radio Scotland on Wednesday (14 February, 20:31), he expressed surprise that he had missed it. This is the issue about
Dessers: he has 13 goals but misses a lot of opportunities in each game. It’s too many.
“He’s got to lower that conversion rate. If Dessers was an out-and-out striker like Rangers have had in the past, such as McCoist,
Boydy, or Billy Dodds, he would already have the same number of goals as Shankland this season, since he gets the opportunities but takes one in three or one in four.”
Can Rangers rely on Cyriel Dessers to beat Celtic to the title
Dessers scored twice for the Rangers in a 3-1 victory, so it’s odd that fans and commentators are still debating the striker, but on
Wednesday night against Ross County, he had the opportunity to score five or six goals.
Even after slotting away his brace with a fantastic header, the 29-year-old never appeared comfortable in the last third of the
game despite having 10 shots, which indicates that he had more attempts on goal than passes completed.
Even with his performance on Wednesday, it’s still unclear whether Dessers can be relied upon to produce consistently in front
of goal. Rangers need a player to hang their hat on if they are to defeat Celtic to the title this season, especially at the top end of the pitch.
Clement will have to hope that the Nigerian forward continues to find a way to knock in one or two goals a game, even if it means
he keeps passing up excellent opportunities, while the January transfer market is closed and Danilo and Kemar Roofe are still out injured.
