What Bruins said about Brad Marchand’s 1,000th game
Boston: Only seven other Bruins have hit the 1,000-game mark in the NHL, which Brad Marchand achieved Tuesday night. After being selected in the fourth round of the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, the captain has lived and played in Boston for his whole professional career.
Although Marchand initially gained a reputation as a tough player, he frequently ran afoul of the league, receiving fines or suspensions for dubious hits. But he turned his behavior around, and now he’s a premier player, a future Hall of Famer, and the Bruins’ leader.
The captain was moved to tears before the puck dropped and was given a standing ovation. Following a video tribute that aired on the jumbotron during the first period, showcasing select moments from his 15-year career, Marchand applauded the TD Garden audience.
Marchand remarked following Boston’s shootout defeat by the Tampa Bay Lightning, “I know how fortunate I am to be part of this organization.” The amount of support and affection the supporters have for the squad is one of the things that makes me adore being here. It really is unique. It’s amazing how quickly it’s already gone. It’s something you wish to preserve always.
Even in Tuesday’s shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Marchand still racked up two points and nearly ended the game in overtime. He’s constantly finding ways to impact the game, and received heaps of high praise after the loss.
Here’s what some Bruins had to say about Marchand reaching 1,000 NHL games:
Coach Jim Montgomery: “We talked before the game about honoring him with effort and emotion in our game tonight because no one has more effort and emotion and loves being a Bruin more than Brad Marchand.
James van Riemsdyk:How hard he works and how seriously he approaches his craft. Whether he is practicing off the rink or honing his talents on it, he puts a lot of effort into his preparation. The reason for his remarkable career success is not coincidental. It’s also evident that he climbs and passes some very big names in the Bruins record books. Seeing that and what’s going on behind the scenes with some of stuff is really cool. Being on the same team as him is good. He is glad to share the ice with you and is undoubtedly a hard competitor.
Charlie McAvoy:“His personality and leadership qualities speak for themselves. We didn’t need any extra motivation tonight. You could sense how special it was and how much he means to us. We wanted to win tonight; it’s disappointing that we only got one point, but I think we put in a good effort… He’s had an outstanding career as a Bruin. I could not be happier for him and what he accomplished tonight.”
David Pastrnak:“Obviously, a significant achievement for Marchy. We really wanted to do a dub for him to make it more memorable. But it’s wonderful for him. The way he plays and everything.
Very well deserved. (The video homage) definitely gives you goosebumps, seeing him play 1,000 games in one shirt. And especially in a unique organization such as the Bruins. So it’s undeniably fantastic. So proud of his accomplishment, and maybe the celebration (on Monday) will make it much more memorable for him.
