Transfer chief now linked with Manchester United move after Rangers speculation.
After Rangers’ April loss to Nottingham Forest, Michael Beale assumed responsibility for recruiting during the summer. That hasn’t really succeeded because two of his acquisitions, Jose Cifuentes and Sam Lammers, have already been sent out on loan. Rangers changed their strategy after Beale was fired in October. Philippe Clement replaced Wilson, but Rangers made the decision to go elsewhere for a replacement, hoping to find a new transfer chief to collaborate with the Belgian. After establishing close ties with Sam Jewel of Brighton & Hove Albion, Nils Koppen was ultimately appointed director of football recruitment.
Rangers wanted Sam Jewell
According to reports from October, Rangers had Jewell as their main target after she stood out in the Brighton hiring process. As the head of recruitment, Jewell has developed a growing name on the South Coast, working alongside former Gers hero David Weir. The Rangers actually denied that they had made an approach for Jewell, although Fabrizio Romano went so far as to report that they had. The Rangers ultimately chose Koppen, and the Jewell rumors were quashed due to uncertainty surrounding the purported chase.
However, Jewell’s name is making headlines again, this time due to rumors of a significant transfer to Manchester United. Dan Ashworth, a former Brighton player, is reportedly being considered by United to become their new sporting director, according to ESPN. Ashworth, who is reportedly a huge Jewell admirer, would then have the ability to enlist the help of other recruitment staff members.
This raises the possibility of Jewell moving to Old Trafford, where she might be able to play a significant part in United’s next chapter of success. Even if Koppen’s hiring appears to be a wise one, Jewell, the son of former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell, is well-liked in the industry, and a move to United should demonstrate that Rangers were onto something by pursuing him.
