Transfer chief now linked with Manchester United move after Rangers speculation.
Rangers missed out on Brighton and Hove Albion’s Sam Jewell, who could now play a key role at Manchester United.
After losing Ross Wilson to Nottingham Forest in April, Michael Beale took charge of recruitment over the summer.
However, two of his signings, Sam Lammers and Jose Cifuentes, have already been loaned out. Beale’s sacking in October prompted Rangers to change their approach.
Nils Koppen ended up being appointed as director of football recruitment, but only after strong links to Brighton and Hove Albion’s Sam Jewell…
Rangers wanted Sam Jewell
In October, reports stated Rangers had identified Jewell as the top target from the Brighton recruitment setup.
Jewell, who works as the head of recruitment alongside former Gers star David Weir, has established a strong name on the South Coast.
Rangers denied making an approach for Jewell, despite Fabrizio Romano’s allegation.
Rangers eventually went with Koppen, and the Jewell rumors ended in misunderstanding regarding the purported chase.
Jewell’s name is again in the news, this time because he is being linked with a big move to Manchester United.
According to ESPN, Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth, who formerly worked for Brighton, is set to become United’s next sports director.
Ashworth would then have the authority to bring in other recruitment staff members around him, and he is known to be a huge supporter of Jewell.
That opens the possibility of a move to Old Trafford, where Jewell might play an important role in United’s new era.
Jewell – the son of former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell – is certainly well-regarded in the game, and a transfer to United
should demonstrate that Rangers were onto something by pursuing him, even if Koppen’s appointment appears to be a solid one.
