‘Shame’: Iraola comments on Billing’s red card against Forests

Even after being sent off against Nottingham Forest, ANDONI Iraola maintains that Philip Billing was unfairly treated. Calling the red card a “shame,” the Dane pressed for further playing time.

Billing did not finish the match after being substituted on as a 56-minute player against Nuno Espirito Santo’s Tricky Trees.

After a nasty foul on Callum Hudson-Odoi in minute eighty-four, the 27-year-old was awarded a straight red card, forcing him off hurt.

Speaking following the 1-1 draw at Vitality Stadium, Iraola expressed his opinion that the red card was severe and made a suggestion that he would file an appeal against the ruling.

Ultimately, Billing was given a three-match suspension, and Cherries took the penalty. He did not play against Manchester City or Newcastle United on Saturday and missed the defeat at Fulham.

“We reviewed the play,” Iraola told the Daily Echo.

“I believe that some of the referees on the panel said it was red in the Premier League report, while others said no, it was unclear.

It is true that when you go in slow motion, you can see the studs and it appears worse, but there is a threat (of an extension to the ban), which is why we opted against appealing.

“I still believe that a red card is not appropriate. One of these blue cards, that is!

“I believe it was a typical blue card they will show because it was cynical.”

Billing’s next opportunity to play will now have to wait until the FA Cup match against Leicester City on February 27.

Despite being a consistent starter earlier in the season, he had slipped out of the starting lineup recently and had been selected on the bench for nine of the last ten Premier League games in which he has been eligible.

Iraola remarked, “It is unfortunate that we will be without him for three games.”

“I believe that this foul has a very severe punishment.

“He was training better the prior week (before Nottingham Forest).

“He was (one of) the first changes the other day. I think he was willing to help and to win more minutes.

“But now it is a setback, because you lose three games, almost three weeks. It is a shame, especially for him.”
