Rangers’ £4.5m man a weak-link as pundit hails duo Clement should have signed

Rangers’ £4.5m man a weak-link as pundit hails duo Clement should have signed

Rangers may come to regret not signing Lawrence Shankland or Bojan Miovski, with Cyriel Dessers perhaps too inconsistent to

rely on in a Scottish Premiership title chase.

Following an unexpected surge of form after Christmas, last week’s 2-1 triumph over Aberdeen was a return to the norm.

Rangers struggled to defeat Neil Warnock’s deep-lying Dons, despite Cyriel Dessers’ clinical performance in prior games.

Dessers’ performance has improved when Philippe Clement replaced Mick Beale in the Ibrox dugout, but he still only has eight

league goals in 21 appearances. Lawrence Shankland and Aberdeen’s own Bojan Miovski, on the other hand, have 17 and 13 goals, respectively, breaching the 20-goal mark in all competitions.

Former Scotland international Charlie Mulgrew expressed concern to Clyde Super Scoreboard that Rangers’ failure to find a

new striker may result in the trophy being decked with green-and-white ribbons again in May.

Rangers still relying on Cyriel Dessers.

“Dessers looks like he needs three chances to score. Mulgrew says, “Three or four chances.” “If they hit the balls over the top in behind for Dessers, I don’t expect him to score.”

“And I think they missed a trick there by not signing Lawrence Shankland or Bojan Miovski.”

Rangers were unlikely to sign Miovski, who is estimated to be worth about £8 million by Sky Sports, during the winter season.

Shankland, the division’s Golden Boot leader, would have cost a similar costly amount. CEO Andrew McKinlay indicated that any

Premiership club wishing to steal the prolific goal-poacher away from Hearts would have to pay with a national record fee of almost £4.5 million.

Philippe Clement’s side can go top tonight

Rangers face Ross County at Ibrox tonight, with Dessers likely to start again with Danilo still out. A win over a team in second-place will bring Clement’s side level with Old Firm rivals Celtic at the top.

Rangers might even move into pole place if they defeat Ross County by more than two clear goals.
