Phil Jagielka, the idol of Everton, has questioned whether the Premier League wants to demote his former team.
The Toffees, who have played in the English top division for more seasons than any other team, are facing relegation as a result of a harsh 10-point penalty for breaking financial regulations. Due to the penalty, Sean Dyche’s club is now in the drop zone. If there were no deduction, they would rank 12th.
The Blues are currently waiting on the result of their appeal against this ruling, which was purportedly finished on February 2. Jagielka and many Everton supporters are wondering if the team is being unfairly attacked in this period of uncertainty.
Speaking on talkSPORT (via the Liverpool Echo), he expressed his worries, adding, “I understand why they [the supporters] feel that way. It’s unbelievable that since the Premier League’s inception, only one club has ever made poor financial judgments.
“Just one team has had points taken away from them. Who cares what’s gone on if other clubs have gotten away with it? These investigations have been ongoing for 25 years, and I don’t know the ins and outs or whether the rules have changed, blah, blah, blah.
