Following their crushing 6-0 loss to Arsenal over the weekend—their worst home loss since losing 8-2 to Blackburn Rovers at Upton Park on Boxing Day 1963—David Moyes might have been excused for going into hiding for a few days.
The Gunners, who performed flawlessly that day, denied the Scot and his first-team crew the opportunity to go past first gear, resulting in a humiliating setback.
Never before has the two opposing styles of play been more evident than they were on Sunday, with West Ham‘s long-suffering supporters undoubtedly hankering after the kind of football Mikel Arteta’s team was generating instead of the “safety first” strategy that has become Moyes’ go-to tactic.
Some Hammers supporters may have believed that Moyes’s departure would be facilitated by the team’s beating because the manager has not yet agreed to a new contract, but was rumoured to be close to doing so prior to the Arsenal loss.
But as Fabrizio Romano points out, Moyes and the team haven’t made a decision regarding their future course of action.
“The question of David Moyes continuing at West Ham is still up in the air. He stated in his exclusive Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside, “Every week it seems like we have ten different reports; one day they’re saying a new deal is done, and then some are saying he’s leaving.”
“The fact is that a new deal has been discussed, but neither Moyes nor the West Ham board have made a final decision at this time. The situation is still fluid.”
This seems that Moyes may lead the team for a few more years, but David Sullivan must be under a lot of pressure given the images on TV of thousands of supporters leaving the London Stadium before halftime against Arsenal.
