Manchester United’s loss is Rangers’ gain as Ibrox legend questions £47m transfer

Rangers win as Manchester United lose as the Ibrox great doubts the £47 million transfer.\

John Brown, a Rangers icon, has expressed doubts over Manchester United’s choice to trade Jack Butland for Andre Onana.

The 62-year-old Ibrox great was showering the England Euro 2024 international with accolades following a brilliant start to his Rangers career.

After his contract at Crystal Palace expired, goalkeeper Jack Butland joined Rangers in the summer. The goalie had previously played his final few months at Manchester United.

Although the goalkeeper never played for the teams who inspired him as a child, John Brown has questioned why United let Jack Butland go, arguing that Butland is more than capable of playing at Old Trafford.

John Brown: Manchester United talent, that’s Jack Butland

John Brown waxed poetic about Jack Butland during a special promotional event for the Rangers Youth Development Company.

Manchester United spent an estimated £47.2 million to acquire Andre Onana as a replacement for veteran goalkeeper David de Gea, who left the Premier League team in the summer.

The Rangers 9IAR legend, however, believes the Gers have received a steal on Jack Butland and that the stopper is on par with or perhaps superior to the Cameroonian.

Brown remarked, “I was always a fan of Butland.” He never received more minutes down south, which shocked me.

“There are many goalkeepers in the English Premier League that I believe Jack Butland to be superior to.

“In my opinion, he was Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper when he was there. If my preference was for a reliable goalie, Jack Butland would be my pick. It’s great for the club that we got him.”

Rangers legend discusses impact of goalkeeper

John Brown has also been comparing Jack Butland to the legendary line of goalkeepers Rangers have been blessed with through the years.

Claiming that having a good goalkeeper is central to a team’s success, the Ibrox legend has claimed that Butland will be central to the team’s hopes this season.

“The biggest thing you need is a quality goalkeeper and Rangers have that,” said Butland. “That’s half the battle.

“You can be an excellent centre back or full back, but if your goalkeeper is not to a level of an Allan McGregor, an Andy Goram or a Stefan Klos, guys I worked with, then it’s not so easy.

Butland plays goalkeeping for the national team. He is new and hasn’t played a lot of minutes in the past seasons. But his quality is apparent. He reassures the backline that they don’t have to be too deep when you watch him emerge.

“With certain goalkeepers I was involved with, I won’t name them, but we would dive deeper to shield them instead of putting our trust in their ability to stop a shot from 25 yards away. This season, he has likely been among the Rangers’ finest players.

Since joining the Gers in the summer, Jack Butland has made 39 appearances, giving up 29 goals and maintaining 20 clean sheets.
