Five Celtic left back transfer possibilities: Brendan Rodgers will look to add a failed target in the summer market.

Five Celtic left back transfer possibilities: Brendan Rodgers will look to add a failed target in the summer market.

When questioned by the media and fans on February 2 over Celtic‘s lack of movement during the winter transfer window, Brendan Rodgers played it safe. Adam Idah and Nicolas Kuhn both joined at Parkhead, but they were sorely lacking in a left-back with Greg Taylor out and many not thinking highly of Alexandro Bernabei, at least not until recent games. Even if the manager acknowledged that the team “could have been braver,” the criticism from supporters who believed their team lacked ambition and was possibly unwilling to spend money persisted.

The hoops will have to settle for their current team until the conclusion of the campaign, but there will be more work to be done in the summer, and left-back will once again become a focal point when it comes to bringing in at least one new player. When the Celts decide to go after that position, Football Scotland has examined five possible choices for them to think about.

Gijs Smal

The Dutchman’s contract with FC Twente expires in the summer, making him available on a free transfer. If they could persuade him to relocate to Glasgow, that would be a really good value signing.
At 26, he would be prepared for the here and now and, should he take off, offer a sell-on value in the future. While said to be interested last month, Rangers remained put.

Owen Beck

When they attempted to sign the Dundee loanee in January, Liverpool refused to negotiate. That won’t stop them from pulling out their credit card and heading back to Anfield in hopes of making a permanent transfer. With the Dens team, Beck has demonstrated his ability to succeed domestically in Scotland, and the Hoops are fans.

Another player linked to the league leaders last summer was the Nantes defender, but his price tag was reportedly too high for them to come up with a deal. Nevertheless, he’s a name that keeps coming up, and if they want to win back supporters, they might be more willing to spend a little money to sign the 21-year-old, who will only increase in value with time.

Gaston Benedetti

The 22-year-old Argentine is a star for Estudiantes in his home country right now, but Celts have played for them before. While it is true that Bernabei has not been a huge success, Benedetti would not have need the £3.5 million that he did, given that his contract was set to expire in the summer. At his age, he would be a free agent, which would suit Celtic, plus he plays for the Argentina 23s now, so he is definitely capable.

Harrison Burrows

The left-back is out of a contract with Peterborough in the summer, but there has been admiration as recently as last month, so that could be revisited. Football Scotland exclusively told you that Celtic approached Burrows’ side to learn his conditions in early January but did not move after that.
