View: Dyche could soon bring Everton gem into first-team setup after what he did last week

Following his performances for Everton’s minor teams, Sean Dyche may be persuaded to bring Halid Djankpata into the first-team setup.

On Friday (9 February), the 18-year-old scored for the Toffees’ U-21s, bringing them level against Aston Villa in Premier League 2. However, they ultimately lost 2-1.

The Togo-born player is extremely versatile, operating in a variety of attacking positions as well as center midfield.

Djankpata started the game against Villa in the middle of the park, and his strike shown that he is more than capable of joining in on assaults and scoring goals.

He has been with the Blues for four years, starting in the academy at the age of 14 and working his way up the ranks.

Last season, the midfielder made eight league games for Leighton Baines’ U-18s, captaining the squad on many occasions.

His form led to him joining the U-21s squad, where he concluded the season with 11 Premier League 2 appearances after being promoted.

Everton signed him to his first professional contract last summer, which runs until June 2025.

After signing his new contract, Djankpata acknowledged his happiness and talked highly of his experience with the Toffees thus far.

“It’s been amazing,” he said. “Throughout my stay here, I’ve evolved as a person. My emotions have developed, and I’m so excited to keep moving forward. Last season was a success because it’s great to captain your team, and we won games.

“Working with Leighton Baines is incredibly entertaining and simple since he can relate to you so well because he recently concluded his career. Paul Tait is an excellent coach as well. He tells you a lot. You can take everything in because of how he speaks to you.”

The midfielder has stepped up again this season after securing a regular berth in the U-21s despite being only 18 years old.

He has made 14 appearances for the U-21s this season, with seven yellow cards indicating that he is not hesitant to put himself forward and relishes a tackle.

Dyche has a habit of involving younger players in training and has placed academy stars on the bench this season, so it’s likely he’ll be more involved with the first-team soon.

Djankpata’s impressive performance may pave the way for him to join the first team in the future. It’s crucial to provide a pathway for such individuals.
