A 29-year-old Rangers veteran is anticipated to depart Ibrox on a free transfer.
Jon McLaughlin, the goalkeeper for Rangers, is anticipated to depart the team on a free transfer following a productive four years at Ibrox.
In the summer of 2020, the two-time Scotland international moved on a free transfer from Sunderland to Rangers. The former Burton Albion player participated in the squad that won the club’s first Premiership title in 10 years and went undefeated in his debut season, making 11 league matches for Steven Gerrard’s team.
In the ensuing two seasons, McLaughlin made a further 18 appearances in the league. He was particularly important to Rangers’ 2022 Scottish Cup victory during this time; he started the entire game against his former team, Hearts, and maintained a clean sheet as the Gers won 2-0 in overtime.
Since Rangers signed former Stoke City star Jack Butland in the summer, the Scottish goalkeeper has not played a single minute of football for the team and has not even made the matchday squad. Butland is now regarded as an outsider for the England squad because of his heroics in goal this season.
McLaughin is considered the Rangers’ third choice goalie under Philippe Clement. Both first-choice goalie Butland and backup goalie Robby McCrorie—who has risen to second choice in the last six months—have him as their backup.
McLaughlin’s current deal expires this summer, and Football Insider reports that it will not be extended. This suggests that when the new season arrives, clubs will be free to sign the 36-year-old for nothing.
The Glasgow giants’ goalkeeper has made 46 appearances overall. He also kept goals for Scotland in the competition that was postponed until Euro 2020.
